KitchenAid Classic Series 4.5-Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer (K45SS)
Reviewed / updated: Aug 29, 2026
The entry point to KitchenAid. The Classic K45SS has the same all-metal body and the same front power hub as the pricier Artisan, so it takes every KitchenAid attachment ever made. The compromises are a smaller 4.5-quart bowl, no pouring shield in the box, and far fewer color options.
The cheapest way into the KitchenAid attachment ecosystem.

Our take
The KitchenAid Classic is the model that has been on wedding registries for decades. Mechanically it is close to the Artisan: a die-cast metal housing heavy enough to stay put under bread dough, tilt-head access, planetary mixing, 10 speeds, and the front power hub that turns the machine into a pasta press, grinder, spiralizer or ice-cream maker.
What you give up for the lower price is a 4.5-quart bowl instead of 5, a handle-less bowl, no one-piece pouring shield (KitchenAid sells it separately), and a short list of colors next to the Artisan's twenty-plus. The motor is rated slightly lower at 275 watts, though in practice owners use it daily for whipped cream and pizza dough without complaint.
If you want the KitchenAid build and the attachment ecosystem and can live with a slightly smaller bowl, this is the cheapest way to get there. If you bake big batches or want the bowl handle and the shield included, step up to the Artisan.
Strengths
- All-metal KitchenAid body, same as the Artisan
- Full KitchenAid power hub - 10+ attachments fit
- Decades-long reliability record in owner reviews
- Noticeably cheaper than the Artisan
Weaknesses
- Smaller 4.5-quart bowl with no handle
- Pouring shield not included
- Only a 1-year warranty
- Few color choices, and heavy at 22 lb
Ideal for: Bakers who want the KitchenAid build and attachment ecosystem but do not need the Artisan's larger bowl or color range.
What owners say
Owners echo the Artisan reviews almost word for word: heavy, solid, and still running after 20 to 35 years in several cases. First-time buyers describe a big jump up from a hand mixer. The only 1-star reviews in the sample are from buyers outside the US who found it is 120-volt only, which is not a fault of the mixer.
Excellent everyday mixer with a strong, consistent motor
I've been using this KitchenAid Classic Series mixer since February 2026 and I use it about once a day for whipping, mixing and dough preparation, including whipped cream and pizza dough.
Best mixer ever
Over the years I have purchased around 8 KitchenAids for my mom, sister, daughters and now granddaughters. I bought my own mixer 35 years ago and it is still working fine.
Love this mixer
It looks so nice on my countertop, especially in the black color, and it feels very strong and well made. It makes mixing so much easier and faster.
Love my mixer
Runs like a charm and doesn't try to walk off my counter. Best investment ever.
